September 2020

Hello Killeen Platoon,

Greetings! I hope that you are all doing well and in excellent health as we bid farewell to August and welcome September this year. I want to take a moment to thank you, our volunteers & community partners, for your active participation in our service project last month at the Richard E. Cavazos Elementary School. You guys rocked it, and I am delighted with all the positive feedback I received from our sponsor and other community partners!

As part of the second phase of our The Mission Continues’ Operation Nourish project at Richard E. Cavazos Elementary School, the Killeen Platoon teamed up with the school’s parent-teacher organization (PTO), American Veterans Mission (AVM, Inc.), and other nonprofit organizations to build six Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant, elevated planter beds. Not only will these planters provide fresh food for those in need, but they will also teach the children the value of civic activity and diversity & inclusion since those children with disabilities will be able to participate as well. Collaboration is a crucial ingredient in getting through these tough times together!

The Killeen Platoon shows how the benefits of Operation Nourish extend beyond fighting food insecurity. Our leadership team wants to thank the Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity (FHAHFH) representatives, Ms. Kristin Hannibal and Ms. Anna Ruhlman, for joining us. We also like to thank some of our volunteers who drove all the way from Austin to join us for our service project. Indeed, you showed us that together, everyone achieves more! Last but not least, thanks to the following for-profit organizations for their support and participation in our service project: Mountain View Productions, Southern Treasures, First Command Financial Services, Fort Hood National Bank, and Snapshot Photography.

This September, the Killeen Platoon is planning for three (3) support events, one (1) social event, and one (1) special event in collaboration with the Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful (KCCB), Military Officers’ Association of America (MOAA) central Texas chapter, Copperas Cove Lions Club, and American Veterans Mission. Please visit our platoon website at https://missioncontinues.org/service-platoon/Killeen-platoon for more information and to sign up for any event that suits you and your schedule. We hope to see you at one, a few, or all of our events this month. Please continue to stay safe and healthy out there so that we can continue the mission of service to our community. Charlie Mike!
